Eagles Nest Outfitters FastFly Raintarp Review

Eagles Nest Outfitters FastFly Raintarp

This is my second rainfly purchase from ENO. The stitching and seems hold up well, the tightening system is ingenious, and will stand up to years of use. The only reason it's not five stars is because it's a little heavier than I'd hoped for.

Product Description:
Rain is beautiful. It's being wet that really sucks. Imagine the bliss of resting in a hammock during a spring rain. Frogs singing, droplets splashing on the leaves, the fresh smell of a forest washed clean: all while you stay completely dry. Welcome to heaven. The FastFly's perfectly contoured drip lines will cover you and your gear, and its four-point connection system is a snap to setup. With enough room to cook while sitting in your hammock, you have all your essentials covered. When the rain quits, just stuff it and get back on the trail. ENO offers the outdoor enthusiast a versatile, high-quality option for forging through rough weather. This product complements all ENO hammocks and is displayed with lightweight, rip-stop tarps and shelters. The FastFly can be used with other brands of hammocks as well as independently, to shade and protect your buddies, gear, clothes, or dog.

Eagles Nest Outfitters OneLink Hammock Shelter System Review

Eagles Nest Outfitters OneLink Hammock Shelter System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought mine directly from ENO so I could choose colors and titanium tent stakes. It comes with everything needed, though there was a modification needed, I think, to help make it better.

The only changes I really felt necessary were to purchase additional guylines. The ones included are high quality, and perfect size (you'll want to make sure you purchase exactly the same diameter), but too short. In most situations, they are perfectly fine, however, it seems that when finding trees or boulders the right distance apart, you will invariably find yourself in a situation where the included lines are in fact too short. I don't fault the company for this, as from their perspective, if the trees are the right distance apart, and you hang it the proper height off the ground, the lines included are perfect. It's just that, when actually using this in the wilderness, you'll find yourself eventually in a situation where they aren't long enough.

Aside from that, everything fits perfectly together. The tarp is exactly the right shape and height to keep water off you, and I've spent the night in a downpour to prove it. Perfectly dry, with dry ground under me to put my feet on in the morning and brew tea.

Here's a couple of tips. I found that if you don't sling the hammock tight enough, your weight will pull the hammock down into the bug net and stretch it out a bit, stressing the seams. Hang the hammock as tight as you can get it to prevent this.

Also, if you've never slept overnight in a hammock, don't expect a sleeping bag to keep you warm. Your weight will compress the bag underneath you, effectively eliminating its loft, and causing you to freeze on your backside, while you sweat on top. It sucks. Plan ahead and either drape another sleeping back underneath you to create loft (with a bag that will cut the wind) or bring along a therm-a-rest pad (as I do) to give you some insulation under the sleeping bag. You must create loft under you somehow, or you will freeze in a hammock. Experiment before going backpacking.

Also, if you're new to hammocks and hammock camping, practice (it sounds silly, but it's worth it) getting in and out of the hammock without the bug net on it, so you don't rip the seams or ruin the zipper, or fall out on your face.

Hammock camping is awesome, and this is the way to do it. The tree straps are perfect, the guy line attachments and hardware are brilliant. There's no fiddling with anything to get it right. It's all perfect out of the bag.
As far as comfort goes, nothing is more comfortable than spending the night in the hammock, which is something I didn't expect. I had no idea how cozy and comfy it actually is. Great mornings climbing out of this hammock.

Lawson Hammock Blue Ridge Camping Hammock Review

Lawson Hammock Blue Ridge Camping Hammock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I went camping for the first time with this hammock on a lake in the Cascades outside of Seattle in early in June.It rained all night the second night and I stayed dry, while my friends on the ground all got a bit wet due to problems with inadequate flys, etc.It was a noisy night with the rain hitting the hammock fly, but again very dry.I had some gear under the hammock that also stayed fairly well protected from the rain.

I have two gripes about the hammock. Both result from the fact that it is designed to allow for the fly and therefore to function like a tent. This all-in-one design requires the use of stretch bars at both ends of the hammock and these bars create a flatter surface than that of a traditional hammock. That flatter surface creates a couple of problems. It is a harder surface to sleep on.You need a pad for comfort and warmth even though you are not on the ground. And worst of all, the whole thing is vulnerable to flipping over if you move outside the center of gravity inside of the hammock when you turn over in the night.I found myself waking up needing to roll over and having to hang on to the side of the tent/hammock tightly as I gingerly repositioned myself.

Also, because is has a flatter surface, you can't lie at an angle or somewhat perpendicular to the line of the hammock to straighten out, and as a result your feet and head are always above the center of your body. Not a big deal, but does make for stiff knees in the morning (I am 58 years old). You need to attach another sleeping bag under the hammock to keep warm on chillier nights. This makes for more gear to haul around with you [1-2 pad(s), 2 sleeping bags, one for the under side of hammock, and one for inside, and the hammock itself].I use a kayak or a canoe and do not backpack, so the extra weight is manageable, which would also be true for car camping.

My hammock was ordered in green butit arrived in camouflage material. The natural pattern is actually very pretty and blends in with the surroundings well.No complaints, unless you want your tent to be brightly coloredfor visibility in case of an emergency.

Overall, this hammock is affordable and much more comfortable than sleeping on the ground with a pad, or sleeping on a cot with a pad; neither of which work for me any more.So I am definitely going with this contraption over those two other options in the foreseeable future!
