Mountain Hardwear Light Wedge 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season Review

Mountain Hardwear Light Wedge 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season
Average Reviews:

This tent is great. Can be set up by one person in minutes. Fits 3, roomy for 2, palatial for 1. Plenty of room to move around, get dressed, and stow gear. Excellent peak height inside. Big door makes for easy entry/exit. Big mesh panels provide excellent ventilation. Haven't used it with the fly yet. Make sure you get the footprint too. Recommended.

6/15/10 update: recently spent a few days camping out in Utah in unexpectedly windy conditions. Winds 20-30, gusting to 50. With the fly in place, attached to the tent at all points, and everything tied and staked down tight, THIS TENT STOOD FAST.

Again- Recommended.

Aura 2P Tent - 2 person by Marmot Review

Aura 2P Tent - 2 person by Marmot

Spent way too long researching tents for size, weight, durability, mesh area. Did not care about cost. This tent was the winner. I'm 6ft, head and toes don't touch ends. Sit up room excellent. Wide enough for me and 2-12yr olds. Hammered in rain for hours, with 90% humidity, 95F, doors open, not a drop. Vestibule big enough for packs. Stuff sack large for packing wet tent. Set instructions need help (longest poll attach to red tabbed corners and pole hubs smooth side face up) Don't worry about all the comments on the poles or difficulty setting up. Just follow the sentance above. Only con, zippers catch (4 of 5 stars). Really happy with purchase.

Sierra Designs Convert 3 Tent Review

Sierra Designs Convert 3 Tent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought this tent for occasional snow trips and for car camping, the latter as it is roomy enough for a queen size air mattress. The first night out in Olympic National Park we were caught in a deluge--rain falling like walruses and whales, not cats and dogs.We successfully set up the tent without getting the interior wet, and stayed dry all night.

There are two air vent snoots near the top of the tent.In addition, the doors on each end have a rain shield, so they can be opened part way.As this four season tent is a single wall design, these features are essential to keeping the inside of the tent from developing condensation, and they work very well.Noseeum netting will still keep the bugs out while you're letting fresh air in.While we haven't exposed the tent to fierce winds, what wind we encountered has been shed smoothly.

The process of setting up the tent differs from that of typical tents. After laying out the tent, the hoop poles are inserted in their sleeves. Then someone must crawl inside the tent with the front-to-aft frame pole, and place the ends in their anchor points while arcing the pole across the ceiling. When taking down the tent, be careful not to pull on the hoop poles--they are shock-corded, and will separate into their sections if you do so.Instead, pull fabric down on the far end section, and then *push* it along to advance the pole outward--it helps to have someone else guide the free end to keep it from going into the mud or the brush.

If you are used to standard backpacking tents, the interior feels immense.Attachment points allow one to hang clothing items, lights, or a mesh storage area inside the tent.Normal sized occupants can sit up comfortably.

My only quibbles are that I find myself fumbling with the door zippers, as there are just too many. And the stuff sack seems rather flabby. But these are very minor concerns. We're quite satisfied with this well-conceived product.

Sierra Designs Lightning XT 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season Review

Sierra Designs Lightning XT 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using a North Face Starfire (tunnel-dome style) tent for 12 years on backpacking and a few car-camping trips with zero complaints - at least until my wife and I got a black lab dog.Quarters were cozy for the two of us, but for the three of us it was downright cramped. So we purchased this Sierra Designs Lightning XT tent for our backpacking outings to have extra room for our dog and gear.We like to hike, camp, and backpack year round in Idaho, so we get everything from 100 degree heat (for a few weeks, anyways) to wet and rainy Spring and Fall seasons, to 10 or 12 feet of snow.It is all usually accompanied by wind of some form or another. We haven't put three people in it, so I can't speak for whether or not it is a roomy 3 person tent, but it sure is a comfy and spacious 2 man tent, even with the dog.

The tent is super light weight; it packs down to the same size and weighs about the same as my North Face 2 man tent.Splitting it between two people makes even better and not at all bulky or heavy in a pack. The tent is almost entirely mesh, which my wife really likes on starry nights, with a bathtub style waterproof bottom. The rainfly is coated nylon and comes down just an inch or two shy of the ground with two vestibules, since there are two doors on the tent.It hooks in to the tent corners where the tent poles hook in, as well clips on to the poles for added stability.Setting the poles up is different than other tents I've used, but seems like it will hold up well in sub-hurricane winds. It is easier to do with two people, but it can be set up by one person if needs be.The tent doesn't have sleeves for the poles, there are just clips every foot or so which seems a little less bomb-proof than my North Face tent, but I haven't had any problems. The poles are hubbed, which also seems a bit less bomb-proof, but the major loads and stresses placed on the poles doesn't go through the hubs so I don't think it will be an issue in the future. The third less bomb-proof item is the fabric - its a little lighter and thinner than my North Face tent to save on weight and bulk. However, the poles, fabric, and clips are all very high quality, so I seriously doubt that I will have any issues with reliability or durability with this tent.

The idea to use Jake's Feet connectors, hubbed poles, and a full mesh top aren't brand new, and most of the big manufacturers buil tents this way.So I figure I won't knock the design unless I really do have a problem.Hence, it still get's 5 stars because it is a high quality, spacious, and VERY light and packable tent. Overall, I'm very pleased with the tent and expect years of service out of it without any issues.

Hang on; ?09 brought about a lighter and bigger version of the Sierra Designs Lightning XT 3 3-Person 3-Season Tent? Yup. Sierra Designs used a new pole configuration that lightens connections, increases interior room, and makes set-up and take-down easier while boosting this tent?s sturdiness when it?s deployed. This three-season tent has two doors for easy night-duty access and 46-inches at the peak height so you and your buddies won?t feel like you?re stuck on the bottom bed-bunk.

Marmot Twilight 2-Person Tent w/ Footprint and Gear Loft Review

Marmot Twilight 2-Person Tent w/ Footprint and Gear Loft
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My son and I camp with this tent frequently and we like it very much. The floor size is very good and the large vestibules are an excellent feature. It is also very well ventilated with the fly up.

There are a few niggling things that I do not like about this tent. The gear loft or gear attic is not usable as-is. Because it hangs directly in the center of the tent, headroom is reduced by 6 to 8 inches. The attachment loops for the loft should be moved to the foot end of the tent, where it would be accessible but not intrude upon headroom.

The stays for the doors and fly openings are just plain goofy. Instead of a tapered plastic toggle, there's a section of cord with a cord-lock knotted onto the end. The cord-lock is very difficult to push through the opposite loop, to tie back the doors or the fly. They're doubly-hard to fumble with wearing gloves! After lengthy discussion with a floor salesman, our only guess is that the cord-locks are provided as "extra" gear replacements for some other Marmot gear. That's redundant - I don't need four extra cord-locks. At any rate, I replaced ours with toggles made from pieces of dowel rod.

The manufacturer needs to diagram out instructions for folding the fly. The plastic dowels that pop out the fly vents can tear through the fly when it is being folded and rolled up if they are not oriented correctly. Also, the fly needs to be folded such that the window stays flat and is not folded or creased back upon itself.

I like the storage pockets at the head of the tent, the appearance of the tent, and the layout. This tent shrugs off wind like nobody's business. There do not seem to be any stress points where the fabric is stretched especially tight, to cause premature wear.

This tent may be listed for backpacking, but at over five pounds, it's really not well-suited for that purpose unless you're breaking it up between two people. The fly is the heaviest single component.

Overall, quite content with the purchase. The details drag it down.

Product Description:
Large double vestibules, two doors, and tons of interior space make the Marmot Twilight 2-Person 3-Season Tent a top choice for rainy days in camp. The Twilight Tent easily holds your backpacks, shoes, and other gear under the 21.7sq feet of vestibule space, and the steep end walls allow campers to sit up for an intense card game. Marmot used a clip pole system on this double-wall tent to make setup fast and simple because seconds count when rain starts soaking your gear.

Mutha Hubba 3 Person Tent Review

Mutha Hubba 3 Person Tent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this tent a few years ago and have nothing but kind things to say about it.

1.)It's sorta light.Considering its size, it's sorta light, probably around 7 pounds when you include the footprint (not included.)Considering how voluminous this thing is, I really don't mind the extra ounces.

2.)It's freakin' huge.Seriously, this thing is the airplane hanger of small tents. The way the poles pull this thing apart, there is just tons of headroom in this then.Maybe it's a character defect of mine, but I get a little uneasy being in confined areas, like when you're trying to get a pair of pants on in a tent and you're banging your head against a wall/ceiling.I've never had a problem like that in this tent.Seriously, it's gigantic.I'll bet if you took a ratio of square footage to cubic footage, this one would win by a mile.

3.)It's mostly screen. No more riding out humid, still nights. With all-around screen, whatever little wind is around -will- pass through your tent.My last tent had a clever wind-flow system so that you had to position the tent just right with respect to the wind to catch any breeze.Never again!

4.)It's easy to use. It's a snap to put up and the rain fly is very easy to deal with. The doors are very intuitive and easy to get in and out of.It's really a no brainer. The only challenge is reading the directions the first few times to figure out when, where and how the poles go in.After that, it's smooth sailing.

5.)It's lasting quite well.I've had this for three years now and we camp regularly in it, even in the snow.So far, no stitches have popped, all the zippers are cherry and as far as I can tell, there isn't even any abrasion on it.My guess is that the rain fly has faded a bit, but I would have to compare it to a fresh one.Other than that, I'm quite surprised at how well this is holding up.

This is a really great tent.My -only- complaint is that the vestibules really cannot hold that much stuff. When this is billed as a "three person tent" I'd say there is no theoretical way to fit three campers and all of their stuff into this tent. For the two of us, however, this tent is just perfect.

Big Agnes Copper Spur UL 3 - Three Person Tent Review

Big Agnes Copper Spur UL 3 - Three Person Tent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We picked this tent up the day before leaving on an 8-day hiking trip in the Grand Canyon. The tent is about 4-1/2lbs including rainfly and poles... much lighter than our 'reserve' tent which weighed about 8lbs.The tent was easy to set up and of the 7 nights, 4 of them we left the fly off utilizing only the screen top.The large vestibules of the fly are nice for boots and other gear with excellent air circulation. It did not rain on us so I can't speak to the water impermeability, but we did get some very strong winds.Because of the full screen top and air gaps under the fly, the wind was able to blow a bit of dust into the tent.We used the fly in the strong wind as the tent is more 'aerodynamic' with the fly and more tie points are provided on the fly.The only criticism I could possibly come up with is the lightweight floor, but this is expected given the overall light weight of the tent. The manufacturer recommends using the footprint to help protect the floor, but that is 1lb we did not want to carry for 8 days - the floor held up fine given some care (clearing as many rocks as possible from the tent area).Overall we are very pleased with the tent and look forward to future camping trips.
