Kelty Sunshade Review

I recently saw a couple of these shelters on a camping trip and knew I had to have one. After reading some reviews on the square footprint versions and heard they were difficult to set up,I opted for this because I typically have to accomplish this chore alone.I had this shelter up within five minutes all by myself and I'm a small person. The poles are some of the thickest and most heavy duty bungee type fiber-glass poles I've ever seen and it really pays off once the shelter is standing. It feels super sturdy. The poles account for most of the 10 pounds of total weight, but it's not to heavy to carry a good distance. One feature that I thought showed great fore-thought was that there were two sets of eyelets in the bottom strap that the pole feet hook into. This would assure a snug fit over the years as the fabric stetches, otherwise you'd wish you had some way to take up the slack.I haven't used the shelter in a high wind situation yet, but judging by the sturdiness afforded by the triangular shape... I'm sure it would do great as long as you staked it down with the six provided stakes (2 opposing stakes per foot).Plenty of room in the stuff sack elminated what's always my biggest fear, getting it all back in the bag. No problems there. I'd definitely recommend this one to anyone.

Kelty Shadehouse Review

I've used Kelty backpacking gear for many years and have never had a complaint. Unfortunately, the Shadehouse fails to live up to Kelty's usual high standard.

The shelter can not be easily assembled by a single person (I spent well over a half hour before giving up and calling my wife to help). The shock cords holding the transverse tubes together are too weak and the poles constantly come apart. There are four straps included that are not mentioned in the assembly directions but that are absolutely necessary for setup; you are left to decide how to use them yourself. The plastic corner hubs are loose fitting allowing the poles to spring out anytime they are not under tension. To tension the canopy you have to pull the corner straps and your hands get in the way of the gromets.Tensioning the canopy causes the fabric to catch the poles and often results in disconnecting the sections. The photos show a nice high walk through shelter, the reality is a short squatty structure where the poles have to be placed under extreme tension to make it tall enough for my 5'6" height (if you are 6', give it up).

Thankfully, not everything is bad. Once set up it is a good looking shelter that sheds light rain well and stands up to a pretty stiff breeze. There are 12 aluminum anchor pins supplied, three for each corner, and tie-down guy lines with figure 9 clips that work well. The weight is slightly over 10 pounds or about 1/6th the weight of one of the popular pop-up shelters. The whole thing fits into a carry bag about 20" long with room to spare.

If your focus is a shelter for a few days at the beach or on the mountain and you don't want to carry the house with you, this shelter will work well.If you need fast easy set up for a couple of hours at the track, keep looking.

Product Description:
Camping is a terrific outdoor activity, but it can be a real drag when the sun beats down on your campsite. Enter the Kelty Shadehouse, a versatile freestanding shelter that's designed to protect you from the elements. The Shadehouse--which easily covers your seating area or picnic table--is made of tough 75-denier polyurethane polyester taffeta, helping it hold up to long-term use. In addition, the Shadehouse resists gusts and bumps from passersby thanks to its DA17 pre-bent aluminum poles. Designed by DAC specifically for tents, the DA17 poles are stiffer, stronger, and lighter than fiberglass poles, with a cost that's only slightly higher. And should you need a little more protection than the Shadehouse itself can offer, the shelter is compatible with attachable accessory walls (sold separately). Other details include NiteIze Figure 9 guyline adjusters, which make it easy to tense the rope and release the tension (no more tying, adjusting, and untying knots), and clip-sleeve construction, which helps increase the overall strength of the shelter.

About Kelty
Kelty has been building affordable, reliable outdoor gear since 1952, helping everyone--from the first-time camper to the experienced mountaineer--embrace the outdoor experience with confidence. Dick Kelty launched the company after years of making backpacks in his home or garage for friends, hand forming and welding each of the frames while his wife sewed the pack bags. The original Kelty packs included aircraft-aluminum contoured frames, padded shoulder straps, waist belts, clevis-pin attachments, nylon pack cloth, zippered pockets, and hold-open frames. Dick Kelty quit his carpentry business in 1956 to focus full time on Kelty Packs, and turned an old Glendale, California, barbershop into his first retail store and factory. In the ensuring years, Kelty expanded its product line to include daypacks, luggage, waterproof clothing, child carriers, jogging strollers, and more.
