Portable 8' Beach Shelter Review

We bought this to take with us to the beach to shade our 8 month old baby. I also wanted a discrete place to nurse her as well.
I set it up at home first to see how difficult it would be - it was really easy - just three poles used and its up! It was very roomy.
Definately a bit more difficult at the beach to do it, but that's factoring the wind and sand. Still quite easy though.
It was very cool inside, however, not when the front is zipped up (which I tried when I needed to feed the baby) --- it got very hot with the front closed up. But it still offered alot of privacy, even with the front part opened up.

It folds up smaller than one of those packageable lounge chairs, very light, and I know its going to be something we use for many years.

ABO Gear Tripod Shelter Review

To anyone who complained about how difficult it is to set up, Eagle Scout or not, I can only say that you're not doing it the right way. Or you're too weak to do it. Either way, if it's done right, it's no harder than tying boots snugly.

Hint: when you're ready to bow the 1st pole, set the ferruled end on the ground, vertically between your feet while you're standing up and making sure no dirt can fill it (I set it on a sandal instead of right on the dirt). Pull the fabric down systematically, until the ring passes the ferruled end. Grab the fabric and the pole about 2-3 inches from the end with one hand like you're choking it, making sure the fabric does not slide out again. Lift the pole off the ground so you can see what you're doing. With the other hand, slide the pin into the pole. It's that easy. Repeat the process for the 2nd and 3rd poles.

It took me less than 20 minutes from start to finish, all by myself. The key is to plant the ferruled end of the pole securely on the ground while you work the fabric with both of your free hands.

It's the best shade I've ever bought. The other shade that I own, a 10'x10' type, weighs 50 lbs and is quite large in a package, compared to this 11-lbs shade that fits in a small nylon sack. The 2008 model comes with heavy-duty poles which is an improvement to the smaller diameter poles of the earlier model. There is no way these poles will split, unlike the earlier version, as reported by some.

About ABO Gear
ABO (Australian Beach Outdoor) began in 1995, with the humble goal of finding a solution to the common beach towel. The company called its first product the ABO mat--an oversized cotton mat with four stakes to prevent it from blowing away in the wind which folded into a convenient fanny pack. This initial product launch led to other popular items, such as beach tents, picnic blankets, beach hammocks, and more. In developing new products, the company's first aim is always to create gear that minimizes ABO's carbon footprint. ABO gear remains a fast-growing company with products in the beach, outdoor, pet, gift, and travel goods market.

ABO Gear Instent Max Shelter Review

I searched the Internet far and wide for a beach shelter big enough for two people to lay down inside comfortably and be completely protected by the sun -- with very easy set-up and take-down.This one seemed to fit the bill perfectly, although I was concerned about the negative reviews here with respect to wind damage. When it arrived, my boyfriend and I opened it up at home as practice before hitting the beach (great advice from previous reviewers). We were very impressed with how quickly it really does pop up and come down, and how easy it is to get back in the carry bag.

Fast forward to its first day on the beach. We pop it up, we weigh down the pockets with big rocks from the beach, and we tie a knot on top (also great advice I got here). It was wonderful for about two hours -- until it BROKE!On the first day out!One of the curved plastic rods on top broke at one of the joints, and the whole thing collapsed because of it.I think one of the other negative reviews mentions that the plastic used in this tent has basically no structural integrity, and I certainly believe that to be true, as well. There was a sea breeze, but when is there not a breeze on the beach? And plenty of other tents in our vicinity made it through the entire day.

I was ready for battle when I contacted Amazon to get a refund.I had read here that other people had a horrible time getting their money back, but now I think those people may have purchased through ABO Gear directly.I'm SO glad I purchased through Amazon. No questions asked, no battles fought -- I just called for a return shipping label and then they informed me when they received the product, when the return was processed, and again when they had credited my account.

So, I'm disappointed that the tent turned out to be useless on an average day at the beach (here in the Northeast US, at least), but I'm so impressed with Amazon's customer service. After this experience, I'll be much more likely to purchase bigger ticket items through them in the future.
